Nikon D3100 Review

Here is one of the honest Nikon D3100 review by H. Erickson-Sander that already purchase and use this Camera.
This is my first DSLR and I have to say I'm so enjoying this wonderful Nikon! I've been using it for a few months now, my husband bought me this as an anniversary gift for me in January and I wanted to get to know this camera before reviewing it. I've been having a great time getting to know this technology which is new to me (I've only ever used a simple point & shoot before). While I'm aware that there are DSLRs out there that are several times the cost of this one, and also come with even more advanced features, I have to say this digital SLR is a fantastic starter camera for those who are wanting to get into photography - whether it's just a hobby or even professional.

I was most interested as I like to take nice photos for my blogging and also practice photography techniques with my children. Although someday I hope to pick up a few more fancy lenses, this Nikon camera comes with a great starter lens which takes some excellent photographs. As with any DSLR, it does take some learning and adjusting to in order to know how to operate this camera. While it's more complicated than a simple point & shoot that just about anyone could figure out, the Nikon D3100 is one of the more manageable DSLRs for beginners. I still have a lot to learn about this technology, but so far I've found this camera fairly easy to understand. It has a very helpful, built-in help system as well, available on any setting at the touch of a button. I'm also a fan of the easy "trash button" that lets me delete photos I don't want quickly and easily, as opposed to having to navigate through a menu in order to delete anything.

The built-in flash is okay, but we definitely plan to buy some additional flash accessories in order to give this camera it's fullest potential. The built-in can only do so much, so definitely consider that before buying - you're probably going to want to spend the money on a nice flash as well.

We've had zero complications with this camera, although we're taking our time getting to "know" it, and very much enjoying the process. If you're a beginner photographer, or simply wanting a really nice camera for home/personal/business photography, the Nikon D3100 comes highly recommended by this family! It comes everywhere with us now, and we're so pleased with it's capabilities, especially considering the price compared to other comparing DSLRs. Enjoy! She's a beauty.

Nikon D5100 Controls

D5100 has a very different ergonomics has a life of mechanical switches that can befound on the left shutter release on top of the camera with her full-articulated LCDscreen.

D5100 direct the film shoot button positioned within easy reach for shooting footage'take' fast. Unfortunately, a new position which means there is no room for a lever drive.

Rear of camera controls

The back of the camera has been carefully arranged so that the primary shooting controls are immediately available on the right-hand side of the camera. The rear dial controls exposure parameters (in concert with the exposure compensation button which sits just behind the shutter button), while the configurable AE-L/AF-L button is also within easy reach. The newly added live view lever isn't as easy to reach as the same control on the D3100/D7000, but has the advantage that it is even harder to trigger accidentally.

Meanwhile the buttons needed when operating the menu or on-screen display (where you're likely to have the camera held away from you to view the LCD), have been moved from the left to the right-hand side of the articulated LCD screen. The new control layout has ended up being significantly different to the D5000, and in some respects (we think) it is less than optimal.

Top of camera controls

On the top of the camera there's an 'info' button that turns the rear display on and off, and the exposure compensation button that's within easy reach of your shooting finger. The mode dial gives easy access to everything from the new 'Effects' mode through to traditional PASM exposure modes, but we're disappointed to see that the D3100's drive mode dial doesn't make it onto the D5100, and is replaced instead by a live view switch.

Front of camera controls

The front of the camera plays host to a customizable function button and an active flash button. You can assign one of four functions to it (image quality/size, ISO, white balance, and Active D-Lighting), of which we suspect ISO will probably the most popular.

The active flash button itself is an unusually good design for this type of camera. On most models at this level this button is simply a catch that releases the flash - instead the D5100's allows you to configure its behavior too. Hold the button and spin the control dial and you can switch flash modes (including second-curtain sync), hold it and the exposure compensation button as well and you can apply flash exposure compensation - all without taking your hands out of the shooting position. It's easy to overlook nice touches like this because they all mean the camera's operation is unobtrusive.

Unlike the all the more expensive models, though, the D5100 cannot act as a controller for Nikon's wireless 'Creative Lighting System' flash setup - for this you need a high-end external unit such as the SB-900. The white dot just beneath the Fn/self-timer button is the alignment indicator which is used when mounting compatible lenses.

Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera

Canon Digital Rebel XSi image playback looks great, and perhaps because of higher resolution than the sensor, there is very little delay when you zoom of 10x while the image loads and displays properly, very good angle LCD display, you can still see the screen holding the camera almost straight up to overhead shot I estimate the point of view is about 160-170 degrees both horizontally and vertically.

The Digital Rebel XSi has a separate status screen above the main LCD screen, and the 30D had one on top of the camera, so I wasn't sure if I was going to like the big LCD acting as the status screen and no top screen. I'm happy to say that this arrangement works well, at least for me.

The back screen makes it really easy to take all the settings at a glance. The viewfinder is much larger and brighter than that in the Digital Rebel. A humongously welcome feature for me is the always displayed ISO value in the viewfinder.

Canon EOS Rebel XSi Highlights

New Technology for Outstanding Images

12.2-megapixel APS-C Size CMOS sensor
New Canon 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and DIGIC III image processor Canon's CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and offers the most pixels in its class. It offers many of the same new technologies to maximize each pixel's light gathering efficiency that were first seen with the professional EOS-1D Mark III model. It's an APS-C size sensor (22.2 x 14.8mm), and there's an effective 1.6x increase in the lens’s marked focal length when attached. Canon’s DIGIC III Image Processor dramatically enhances image quality and speeds up all camera operations for intuitive operation. It works in concert with the EOS Rebel XSi’s sensor to achieve unprecedented levels of performance in all lighting situations.

14-bit A/D converter With the EOS Rebel XSi, analog to digital signal conversion is executed by a 14-bit processor, which generates digital data with incredibly smooth tones. Formerly a feature only present in top-of-the-line pro digital SLR cameras, the 14-bit conversion gives incredibly smooth transitions from light to dark colors, with far less risk of "banding." A sky at sunset is a perfect example. With this rich 14-bit gradation the EOS Rebel XSi offers RAW images of the highest quality that can be processed with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software. Even JPEG files, which are always finished at 8-bits per channel, use the full 14-bit conversion initially to generate the best possible color and tonal detail. Another huge benefit of the 14-bit conversion is the Highlight Tone Priority option, which allows critical shooters to increase the level of detail in bright areas of a scene up to one stop, without affecting overall exposure.

Auto Optimization The EOS Rebel XSi’s Auto Optimization is yet another image-quality tool that comes to the rescue in tricky lighting conditions. It can actually lighten dark areas of a scene while ensuring that bright areas maintain tonal detail. It's now available in all shooting modes, including P, Tv, Av, and Manual.

DIGIC III image processor Developed to maximize performance between the capture and recording stages of digital photography, the EOS Rebel XSi’s latest-generation DIGIC III Image Processor works in concert with Canon’s CMOS sensor to achieve even higher levels of performance. The entire electronic system is totally redesigned, giving the camera its incredible combination of speed and image quality. Digital noise is significantly reduced in shadow areas, and color reproduction is superior.

Speedy, Precise Operation

Excellent performance with 3.5 fps continuous shooting, up to 53 full-resolution JPEGs or 6 RAW images in a burst The EOS Rebel XSi operates with such effortless speed that operation is nothing short of intuitive. With instant startup times, speedy autofocus and minimal shutter lag, the EOS Rebel XSi is one of the fastest cameras available today. It can shoot up to 3.5 frames per second, in bursts of 53 JPEGs or 6 RAW files, so you’ll never, ever, miss a shot.

See the image in large LCD with Live View Function The EOS Rebel XSi has a huge, bright 3.0-inch TFT LCD monitor with 230,000 pixels and a viewing angle of 170 degrees. It’s perfect for Live View composition or viewing camera settings like AF, ISO, Metering, AF Point selection and flash options. And the maximum brightness of the EOS Rebel XSi LCD monitor is about 30-percent greater than its predecessor, which is a big benefit when you're using the camera in bright sunlight.

Live View Function Live View Function enables you to view your subjects directly on the huge 3.0-inch LCD monitor. It's easy to magnify any part of the scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focus. And now, there are two ways to use Autofocus along with Live View Function in the EOS Rebel XSi. You can even choose a grid overlay, perfect for keeping straight lines in your subject straight in your pictures. In the studio, Live View Function can be used remotely via a computer through the EOS Rebel XSi’s USB connection.

Fast 9-point AF system, and two types of AF during Live View Function The EOS Rebel XSi has a high-precision 9-point wide area AF sensor for fast, accurate focus even in dim lighting. It has a number of focus modes, including One-Shot AF, AI Focus AF, AI Servo AF and Manual. In Live View Function, the EOS Rebel XSi has two AF modes: Quick mode, which uses the camera's standard 9-point AF system, and Live mode, which is a contrast-based AF system that reads the sharpness of subjects right from the imaging sensor, and can be overridden by pressing the AF mode selection button. A familiar feature in PowerShot cameras, Live mode AF uses similar technologies to achieve focus, while Quick mode is more appropriate for capturing action or for shooting in low light.

Compatible with compact SD and SDHC memory cards The EOS Rebel XSi is the first EOS Digital SLR camera to use popular SD and SDHC memory cards only. Compact, inexpensive and available in increasingly large capacities, SD and SDHC memory cards are a perfect complement to the EOS Rebel XSi’s compact and lightweight body design.
